What is Onyfix and how does it work?
Onyfix is a nail correction system developed in Germany, now used by podiatrists across Europe. It works using a composite band — a thin, flexible strip — that is bonded across the surface of the nail using a special adhesive. As the nail grows forward, the band exerts a gentle, continuous corrective force that gradually encourages the nail to flatten and widen.
Think of it as similar in principle to orthodontic braces for teeth — gradual, consistent correction over time rather than a single surgical intervention.
The composite band is applied in clinic in a single appointment. It’s painless, requires no anaesthetic, and you can walk out and carry on with your day immediately afterwards. There are no dressings, no wound care, and no restrictions on activity.

Onyfix works well across a wide range of patients and presentations. It is particularly well suited for:
Patients who want to avoid surgery
For many people with involuted or pincer nails, nail surgery — while effective — is not something they want to pursue. Onyfix offers a genuine, evidence-based alternative that addresses the nail shape directly.
Patients who are not suitable for nail surgery
Nail surgery requires local anaesthetic and a period of wound healing. For patients with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, compromised circulation, or those on anticoagulant medication, surgery carries additional risk. Onyfix is non-invasive and does not create a wound, making it a safe option where surgery would need careful consideration.
As a first-line treatment before considering surgery
For milder involuted nails, Onyfix can be used as a first-line approach. If the nail responds well, surgery may never be needed. If correction is incomplete, the patient is better informed about their nail’s behaviour before making a decision about surgery.
Children and teenagers
Onyfix is suitable for younger patients where nail surgery would be particularly undesirable. The painless application makes it well-tolerated even in anxious patients.
What does the treatment involve?
Your first appointment
The nail is assessed and measured to determine the correct Onyfix band size
The nail surface is prepared and cleaned
The composite band is bonded across the nail — the whole process takes around 20–30 minutes
You leave with no dressing, no restrictions, and no aftercare requirements beyond keeping the nail clean and dry
Ongoing treatment
As your nail grows, the band grows with it, continuing to exert corrective force. You’ll return to clinic every six to eight weeks for assessment and, where needed, a new band to be applied. Most patients see meaningful improvement within two to three appointments.
The number of treatment cycles needed depends on the severity of the nail curvature and how quickly your nail grows. We’ll give you a realistic picture of expected timelines at your first appointment.
How is Onyfix different from other nail correction systems?
There are several nail correction systems available — including wire-based braces that hook under the nail edges. Onyfix is bonded to the surface of the nail, which means:

What Onyfix cannot do
In the interest of being straightforward with you: Onyfix is not the right solution for every nail problem.
It is not suitable for active ingrowing toenails where the nail edge has already pierced the skin and caused infection — that requires a different approach
It will not correct a nail that is severely thickened or deformed by longstanding fungal infection without treating the infection first
It requires commitment to follow-up appointments — a single application will not permanently correct nail shape on its own
Results depend on nail growth rate, which varies between individuals
