Achilles Tendinitis in Horsforth, Leeds

Struggling with pain at the back of your heel or ankle that won't settle down? Yorkshire Foot Clinic in Horsforth provides specialist podiatry assessment and treatment for Achilles tendonitis, helping patients across Leeds — including Horsforth, Rawdon, Guiseley, Yeadon and Headingley — get back to walking, running and everyday activity pain-free.

What is Achilles tendinitis?

Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon — the thick band of tissue connecting your calf muscle to your heel bone. It's one of the most common causes of heel and ankle pain we see in clinic, particularly in runners, walkers and anyone who has recently increased their activity levels.

Clinically, ongoing cases are often more accurately described as Achilles tendinopathy — where the tendon has started to break down at a cellular level rather than simply being inflamed. This distinction matters because it changes how the condition should be treated, and it's something we assess for at your appointment.

Foot Mechanics

The way your feet move and function can place increased stress on the plantar fascia. This may be linked to flat feet, high arches, or abnormal gait patterns.

Tight muscles

Tightness in the calf muscles or Achilles tendon can increase tension through the plantar fascia. Tightness and imbalance elsewhere in the body can also contribute

Activity Levels

A sudden increase in activity, prolonged standing, or high-impact exercise such as running can overload the tissue.

Increased load

Increased load on the feet, including weight gain or long periods on your feet, can contribute to ongoing strain.

Footwear

Shoes that lack support or cushioning can increase strain on the heel and arch, particularly over long periods.

Systemic immune conditions

The immune system and recovery plays a big role in keeping our musculoskeletal body healthy.

Causes of Achilles Tendonitis

Symptoms

The most common symptom of achilles tendinitis is pain in the heel or along the bottom of the foot. This can vary from a mild ache to a sharper, more persistent discomfort.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Pain and stiffness along the back of the heel or ankle, especially first thing in the morning

  • Tenderness or a burning sensation when touching the tendon

  • Pain that worsens with activity — running, walking uphill, or climbing stairs

  • Swelling or thickening of the tendon

  • A creaking or crackling sensation when moving the ankle

  • Pain that eases with rest but returns once activity resumes

Symptoms can gradually worsen if the underlying cause is not addressed, which is why early assessment and treatment are important.

How We Diagnose Achilles Tendonitis at Yorkshire Foot Clinic

Your assessment includes:

  1. A full clinical history — how the pain started, what makes it worse, and your activity levels

  2. Hands-on examination of the tendon, ankle and calf

  3. Biomechanical and gait assessment to identify whether your foot mechanics are contributing to the strain

  4. A clear explanation of what's going on and what's driving it — not just a diagnosis, but the "why"

Achilles Tendonitis Treatment Options

Treatment is tailored to whether you have early-stage tendonitis or more established tendinopathy. Options we offer include:

  • Shockwave therapy — a clinically proven treatment for chronic Achilles tendinopathy that stimulates the tendon's own healing response, particularly effective where symptoms haven't responded to rest alone

  • Custom orthotic therapy — correcting the biomechanical faults (such as overpronation) that are loading the tendon unevenly

  • Footwear advice tailored to your activity and foot type

  • A structured loading/exercise programme to rebuild the tendon's strength and capacity

  • Activity modification guidance so you can stay active while you recover, rather than stopping altogether
